The Art of Grief Thursdays 2-4 pm starting September 17, 2026
$200.00

Come explore how the expressive arts will invite your grief to move through you and be released.  This is a supportive closed group for any adult interested in exploring how the expressive arts can assist in processing and resolving grief. We will explore the complexity of grief and it’s potential to bring about new insights and create positive change. We will use a mixed - media approach including pastels, paint and collage as well as personal writing.

We will meet on Thursday afternoons from 2 -4 pm starting September 17th for 8 weeks. (ending Nov 5th) Participants are asked to pre-register and attend all sessions, as is reasonably possible.

The cost is $25 per class for a total of $200 for all 8 classes, including the materials. If you need a reduced fee, please email me rather than registering online. I have some flexibility that I cannot program into the website. BarbaraDavisLCSW@gmail.com

If you are interested in The Art of Grief, but need an evening time please email me. If there is enough interest I will offer a second class, in the evening,

Introduction to the Altered Book and Visual Journaling

Nature Based Expressive Arts and Journaling September 30-October 21 Wed 6-7:30 pm
$0.00

With Nature as our companion, and our innate creativity as our guide, we will explore how change is the only constant in life.  Together we will explore how the creative process supports our well being by noticing and accepting change as inspiration, rather than something to avoid.  Autumn is the perfect time to explore transitions as we observe the full glory of the fall colors and how the fall lets go into winter.   Using natural objects in concert with basic art materials, we will make two- and three-dimensional collages, paintings, and drawings, and use these creations as prompts for spontaneous writing and personal exploration. Classes will include a combination of reflective writing, art making, and mindfulness-based activities. Participants are asked to bring a writing journal for their personal use to each class, all other materials included in the registration fee.

This class is being offered through the Five Towns Community and Adult Education Program and registration is here The class will take place in Rockland at the Harbor Park Center, 12 Water St. Suite 207.

Come learn a creative way to repurpose old books that you no longer want to read.  Learn to reuse an old book as the foundation for a visual journal.  Recreate a book into a work of art that is made of several small, personal works of art.

Together we will learn how to deconstruct the book and reconstruct it through collage, drawing, painting and the written word.  And all the while we will be recycling materials!

This is a fun and rewarding process that does not require previous art making skill or training.

While we will get a good start on the books during the class, you’ll have your own book to take home and continue to use as a Visual Journal. You are invited to return to our monthly Open Studio to continue your work on your Altered Book.

Registrants are asked  to bring an old hardcover book that they no longer want and are willing to deconstruct.  Non-fiction works best; biographies, history, sociology - books that mention people, culture, the language of emotion and human interaction.  Books written in languages other than English also work.   Used books can be purchased cheap at flea markets and garage sales if you do not have a book of your own to bring.

You will be taking this book apart so please don’t bring any books to which you have a strong emotional attachment  All materials, other than the used books, will be provided.

*If you have trouble finding a book, please email me at BarbaraDavisLCSW@gmail.com

What is Touch Drawing?

“Touch Drawing is a simple yet profound process. Paper is placed over wet paint. The pressure of fingertips on the page forms images on the underside. The hands are extensions of the soul, moving in response to the sensations of the moment. Channels of expression open, enabling feelings to flow. A series of drawings is created, each a stepping stone deeper into the self.

This act of creation unleashes vibrant healing forces that guide the psyche toward wholeness. Even an unconfident artist can experience the fulfillment of seeing their interior life come alive on paper. Touch Drawing is used by artists, therapists, social workers, health care practitioners, educators and intuitives. Touch Drawing is a practice of creative, psychological and spiritual integration.”

Deborah Koff-Chapman, Founder Center for Touch Drawing
